
Sir Chhotu Ram was a great leader and activist in India. He was born on 24 November, 1881, in a small village of Rohtak district, located in todays Haryana. His real name was Ram Richpal, but people called him as Chhotu Ram out of affection.
Chhotu Ram was an intelligent student and he completed his education in Delhi and after that he went to St. Stephen’s College to study law and became a successful lawyer. Yet, he was deeply worried about the problems faced by farmers and the poor people. Due to this concern of him he entered the politics.
In 1916, he founded the Unionist Party along with Sir Sikandar Hayat Khan, Sir Khizar Hayat Tiwana, Rai Ahmad Khan Kharal, Sir Fazli Husain, Sir Shahab-ud-Din and Muhammad Hussain Shah. Which aimed to protect the interests of farmers and rural people in Punjab. He and his party believed that farmers were the backbone of the nation and they started to fought against the abuse by moneylenders and landlords. Sir Chhotu Ram played a huge role in introducing laws that wery helpful and were in the favor to the farmers, such as preventing unfair impoundment of their land.
He and his party also worked to promote education, especially for girls, as he wanted everyone to have equal opportunities and rights. Their vision was to make farmers, workers, and common people to live with impressiveness and pride in a society.
During his political career, Sir Chhotu Ram held important positions in the Unionist Party, being a minister in the Punjab government. His efforts helped change rural life, and People gave him the title “Deen Bandhu,” which means “Friend of the Poor.”
Sir Chhotu Ram was a true leader and wellwisher of the poor and a hero of farmers. His his motive was to stand up for others and working towards a fair of society.
